We can worry about more than one thing at a time. I don’t know how it goes with chimps – can you type rubbish while prying termites out with a stick? – but for people with sophisticated brains it can practically be done while asleep.

1) Miracle cure – miracle cures make up 99% of cons throughout the history of humankind
2) MLM structure to sales – MLM structures are used in many cons (not quite 99% but a significant amount)
3) Lab involved in testing is suing for misrepresentation
4) CEO claims to be a billionaire, isn’t.
5) Labelling ripped off from another product
6) CEO involved in company which had CEO jailed for, among a string of other things, artifically inflating revenue. CEO of evolve actually lists involvment in this company in his CV as if it’s something to be proud of.
7) CEO claims to have companies making tonnes of cash, doesn’t.

I think there are real environmental problems to be discussed and resolved in Copenhagen. However Cap and Trade is a scam and a red herring. Worse of all, Cap and trade is vulnerable to and will be corrupted by the same greed, speculation, and corruption as the “derivatives market”. In the end, because of this, it will become what it’s critics claim it to be – nothing more than a tool for the redistribution of wealth – into already wealthy hands.
I would rather see a binding agreement on a moratorium for ocean trawling, clearcutting of indigenous forest and a commitment for investment in “alternative ” energy technology.

I found the article fairly cynical, attributing a grand Macheavelian scheme to what was just a politician justifying a pragmatic decision to an audience that expects him to only be idealistic. I think it mistakes a spattering of local knowledge of Chicago for wit.
That being said, it’s clear he didn’t want to make the decision to send more troops. I can only guess the long delay was him looking for any other way to get out of the situation other than sending more troops.

This comes right after he calls folks RINOs. I think the term RINO is retarded. The Republican Party, like the Democratic Party one, is in principle a democraticly run institution. If the members of the Republican Party elect someone to be their canidate then that canidate is a Republican…period. If that particular constituancy happens to be more moderate than others then they may elect a more moderate canidate, especially since our system only will supports in a stable manner 2 major parties. It annoys me a lot when folks say a moderate Republican is a Republican In Name Only. That’s the kind of shit the Soviet Comunist Party would do. Just as not all Conservatives are Republican, not all Republicans have to be on the hard right to be “real” Republicans. The same goes for the Democrats that worked so hard to boot Lieberman from the primary when he supported the war.
I consider myself a right of center moderate, and am happy with that.
I think you are right that more of the center are getting disillusioned by him. I think so many people thought he would be this juggernaut that would immediately solve all of the problems our country finds itself in immediately and they are waking up to the fact that he’s just a mortal. Our problems will take a lot more than one year to fix, and for several of them I think he’s just digging us in deeper.

I think that every time people use RINO they eitehr mean “Moderate Republican” or “False Conservative”. I think any time you have a political system that can only seem to accept two parties you are forced to have moderate Republicans. It also confuses the people who like simple little labels that there are different kinds of conservatives. You can be socially conservative, fiscally conservative…and I’m sure many others.
The Sarah conner article again was someone that came up with a cute analogy and thought a whole article could be built on it.
The second article makes a good point about how going from Bush to Obama we are still finding an administration that seems to not want to tell us anything (despite the promises Obama made during the campaign). I think many of the ideals Obama expressed during his campaign have fallen away as soon as he took office.

If I may, I’d like to ask a seemingly stupid question:
Based upon American definitions, what’s the difference between a conservative and a republican?
Depends on who you ask.
For me a Republican is a member of the Republican Party as defined by at least voting in the Republican primaries.
A concervative is harder to nail down but a religious conservative follows more roots based religion (based on the Bible, not more modern doctrines), finanical conservatives want to have a govenment that spends less (by cutting back on government programs and having government work more focused on state and local action rather than federal and focused on community groups). A political conservative wants a smaller federal government and a stronger state or local government. I’d say all of that definition is subject to debate also and I’m not sure I’m right on all of it.
I guess some states have only conventions for their parties. Still, if you participate in the Republican party and register as a Republican you are a Republican, full stop.

The reason I asked the question is because on a recent episode of “The Daily Show with John Steward”, VP Joe Biden stated that it was difficult for Democrats to pass a Heathcare bill despite their majority in the House and the Senate because they have both Liberals and Conservatives in their party.
It got me thinking – If what joe says is true – that there are both Liberals and Conservatives in the Democrat’s Party, who’s in the Republican Party? If the Republican party is comprised of Conservatives, how do they feel about the Republican’s attacks on their fellow Conservatives in the Democratic Party?
I’m assuming Biden means liberal or conservative in a realtive sense and on a more absolute scale would be liberals or moderates (do we call them DINO’s?). Also there are “Blue Dog” Democrats who are generally more fiscally conservative and would oppose the bill on those grounds.
I’m thinking that the “conservatives” within the Democratic party that Biden refers to are the “Blue Dog” Democrats.

Isn’t all political stripes “relative” to one another?
No. They exhibit a distinct red-shift fleeing the center during a primary and blue-shift during the general election.
I’m not suggesting that political stripes bleed into one another seamlessly or that there is little variation between them, but aren’t “conservatism” defined in part, as a contrast to “liberalism”?
In Canada, over the past two decades, the Progressive Conservatives (the main Right of Center party) splintered to form the Canadian Alliance party and then the Reform party (each decidedly more “conservative” – further right of center than the preceding party). This weakened the right wing of Canadian Politics to the point where, in order to have a chance of forming a government, the parties had to merge as the “Conservative Party of Canada”.
All of these parties held the principles of conservatism as their ideals. What separates them was the degree to which tempered those ideals with the ideals of progressives (and not the sincerity with which they hold those ideals).
Yet still, some would classify Canada’s conservatives as being more in line with the US’s Democratic party than the Republican Party.

In many ways you can think of what’s happening now in the Republicans as exactly what you were describing with the Progressive Conservatives and their decendants except that we don’t have proportional representation and so our parties can’t split and merge as easily and so it’s all happening under “The Big Tent” as it’s called. The Democrats also have a big tent where similar things happen.
